Life in the UK English Language Test for UK Settlement

The Life in the UK test introduced in year 2005 for naturalisation and in 2007 for the UK settlement. People who are wishing to apply for naturalisation or for settlement in UK which also called indefinite leave to remain (ILR) and whose level of English knowledge is ESOL 3 or above have to pass this test. Life in the UK English language test is gateway to the British citizenship.

Need of the Life in the UK English Language Test             

This test has designed to evaluate two things: first, the applicant’s knowledge of British life and second, the applicant’s knowledge of the English language. Through this test, the UK government assess that applicants have the sufficient knowledge of the life in the UK and sufficient knowledge of English. The Life in the UK test is mostly in English language. The test also assesses an applicant’s level of English Language skills. This is as important as part of the integration process. A person with good English knowledge and skills should have his/her job search or business enhanced. He/she will also be able to understand all the official and legal information necessary to apply for various things.

Exemption from the Life in the UK English Language Test

Certain groups of people considered exempt from the English language test because their level of English language has already been demonstrated by other means. For example, if you have a degree level qualification, or higher, which was taught in language English then, you need not to show a formal speaking, listening & communication qualification. Your qualification must be equivalent to a bachelor’s or master’s degree or a doctorate level qualification in the United Kingdom.

Any applicants under the age of 18 years or 65 and above are exempt from the life in the UK English language test requirements. Upon application for UK settlement, either a passport or birth certificate should require as proof of age.

Any applicants with the permanent disability preventing them from pass the English language test, may consequentially be exempt from this requirement. Exemption only authorised if the applicant is suffering from a mental imbalance meaning that they are incapable of learning any language.

What Are The Two Certificates Needed To Apply For Indefinite Leave to Remain or British Citizenship?

One is the Life in the UK test certificate and the other is a B1 English test (GESE Grade 5) best taken from Trinity College London as it is the easiest. The exam is only 10 minutes and usually most people pass it unless the student’s English is absolutely zero.

What this means is that  you will need to speak and understand English language to a reasonable level and then you can pass the test.
