FROM 28TH OCTOBER 2013 THE IMMIGRATION RULES HAVE CHANGED

The Home Office has now changed the ‘Knowledge of life and language in the UK’ requirements. If you applying for British Settlement or UK citizenship then you will now need to pass both the Life in the UK test and ESOL Entry Level 3 test (or B1 CEFR equivalent)

For more information on what has changed please visit our UK immigration FAQ on our website.

The language training can be done with any accredited institution with the final B1 CEFR qualification being achieved.

Here are some examples of qualifications you can take at B1 CEFR level:

  • Any qualification at B1 CEFR or above from The Secure English Language Test (SELT) You can see the full list on theUKBA website.
  • You can achieve a qualification in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Entry Level 3. Ideally a qualification which includes speaking and listening. Read more about our ESOL Entry Level 3 test Training Workshop to help you pass your immigration requirements.
  • You can achieve a National Qualification in ESOL with the Scottish Qualifications Framework (SCQF). Make sure this is awarded by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA)

What Are The Two Certificates Needed To Apply For Indefinite Leave to Remain or British Citizenship?

One is the Life in the UK test certificate and the other is a B1 English test (GESE Grade 5) best taken from Trinity College London as it is the easiest. The exam is only 10 minutes and usually most people pass it unless the student’s English is absolutely zero.

What this means is that  you will need to speak and understand English language to a reasonable level and then you can pass the test.
