If your knowledge of English language is assessed at or above entry level 3 which is pre-intermediate level, then you will need to take the Life in the UK Test. From March 2013, the test has been based on the new edition of the book named “Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents (3rd edition).” If you pass the Life in the UK test 2014, then you can only apply to become a British citizen. If your English language knowledge is assessed below ESOL entry level 3 test online then, you will need to pass an ESOL course in English for British citizenship. You should attend ESOL entry level 3 test course at an accredited college and the course you take must include some content which is based on United Kingdom government approved materials for learning about UK citizenship. The qualification you are currently studying also be accredited by an exam board which is approved by the UK government. You will also need to prove that you improved your English language skills while attending the course.
From October 2013, you will need to pass the Life in The UK test for UK citizenship and also produce evidence of speaking, reading and listening skills of English language at least ESOL Entry level 3 test online or equivalent which is also referred as B1 of the CEFR. The government of United Kingdom often makes changes to these regulations, and we recommend to check regularly what is the current situation is on the UK Border Agency’s web site before making an application for citizenship in United Kingdom.
At the end of your course, you will take ESOL entry level 3 test online. Your college may be asked to provide a letter to confirm that you have improved to the higher level of English language by the end of your course, as proof that you have made progress. For example, if you have assessed by your college as being below the entry level 1 at the start of your course, then you must obtain an ESOL qualification at Entry level 1 or above. We strongly recommend you to check that your college is accredited or not, and that the course you intend to study meets all of the above requirements before applying for a course. If your college is not accredited, or the course does not comply with UK government requirements, your application will be rejected and you will not be granted UK citizenship.
One is the Life in the UK test certificate and the other is a B1 English test (GESE Grade 5) best taken from Trinity College London as it is the easiest. The exam is only 10 minutes and usually most people pass it unless the student’s English is absolutely zero.
What this means is that you will need to speak and understand English language to a reasonable level and then you can pass the test.
